Connect your EP-133, EP-40, or EP-1320 to iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android

Best Friend talks to your EP over a wired USB-C data connection — here is how to get the two talking.

Best Friend connects to your Teenage Engineering EP over a wired USB-C data connection. There is no Bluetooth and no Wi-Fi pairing — the app reads and writes the hardware directly, which is what makes it possible to see real pad data and bounce real audio.

What you need

  • A Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II, EP-40 Riddim, or EP-1320 Medieval.
  • A USB-C to USB-C data cable. Charge-only cables will not work — see Which USB-C cable and adapter you need. Lightning devices need a MFi Lightning Adapter with a USB-IF certified USB-A to USB-C cable.
  • iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26 or later, or Android 12 or later. A Mac needs Apple silicon (M1 or later). An Android device needs USB OTG support.

Keep your EP on the latest firmware.

Connect

  1. Power on your EP.
  2. Plug the USB-C data cable into the EP and into your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Android device.
  3. Open Best Friend. It detects the connected hardware and identifies which EP it is.

There is no pairing step and no permission dialog to approve. If the cable carries data, the EP appears.

Once connected, Best Friend loads the project currently on the hardware — every pad, every bank, and the Scene and Song data behind them.

On a Lightning iPhone or iPad

Older iPhones and iPads use Lightning rather than USB-C. They still work, but they need an adapter: an MFi-certified Lightning to USB adapter together with a USB-IF certified USB-A to USB-C cable. Uncertified adapters are the single most common reason a Lightning device fails to see the hardware.

On Android

Your Android device needs USB OTG (On-The-Go) support to act as the host on the connection. Most Android phones and tablets from the last several years have it. If yours does not, the EP will charge from the connection but will not appear in Best Friend.
